About the show:
The Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s and 1930s comes to life in the three-time Tony award-winning musical revue, Ain’t Misbehavin’. Five performers lead a journey through the timeless music of Thomas “Fats” Waller. One of the most popular, well-crafted revues of all time, it’s sometimes sassy, sometimes sultry, and definitely includes moments of devastating beauty that are simply unforgettable.
The show won the Theatre World Award, the Drama Desk Award for Best Musical, and Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical (Nell Carter), Best Direction and Best Choreography. It was produced on-Broadway and off-Broadway, in London, in an NBC-TV production, a 20-year Broadway revival, and a 30-year revival tour.
The musical is a tribute to the black musicians of the 1920’s and 1930’s who were part of the Harlem Renaissance, an era of growing creativity and cultural awareness, and takes its title from the 1929 Waller song “Ain’t Misbehavin'”. It was a time when Manhattan nightclubs like the Cotton Club and the Savoy Ballroom were the playgrounds of high society and Lenox Avenue dives were filled with piano players banging out the new beat known as swing.
The 30-plus songs include Honeysuckle Rose, I’ve Got a Feeling I’m Fallin’. Looking Good but Feeling Bad, ’T Ain’t Nobody’s Bizness, The Joint is Jumpin’, Spreadin’ Rhythm Around, Mean to Me, Your Feets Too Big, Black and Blue, I’m Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter, Two Sleepy People, and the title song, Ain’t Misbehavin’.
